Art of Men Part 2 - May 28, 2009

Very excited that the Art of Men CD is being launched at the Mint in Los Angeles on Wed 26 Aug 2009 - the day after my birthday. Sorry I can't be there, but I am there in spirit!

Recently learned that the double CD has 35 tracks that were chosen out of 700 entries, which is so encouraging to me! Yay - it means that I'm one of the top 5%, and it is such a confidence booster...

Listened to a John Demartini talk last night here in Jo'burg - with music I know I have truly found my passion and my love. It's a joyous, liberating feeling...

Why I love Ina Wiegand - May 25, 2009

Ina is helping me prep for my Licentiate that I'm doing through Rockshool in London (LRSL). She's helping me FREE OF CHARGE because that's just the kind of person she is.

Thank you Ina! As a way of showing my gratitude I'm starting a one-year singing scholarship in her honour (details at www.singers.co.za).

Ina's studio in Pretoria is Respiro (www.respiro.co.za).

LRSL - May 8, 2009

Preparing for my Licentiate exam which I have just learned will be on 5 August. Exciting! Aside from one Queen song and two other covers, the rest of the stuff I'm doing will be original... Can't wait.

New Blogs - April 6, 2009

Ok, so it's been a while... The debut solo album is getting on, with a bit of refinement and a few changes. But I'm excited about it!

In the interim, I've also started some new blogs: one is my journey through music as an artist; the other is a music business blog.

The Duke of Cornwall Singers Live Again... - February 2, 2009

As the Americans would say, who woulda thunk it? I vowed never to go back to my old school for a reunion of any kind, but 22 years after we did our first school tour, the Duke of Cornwall Singers reunited at St Stithians College for an evening of song last night. It was great to see everyone. We're all a little older (!!!) and much wiser, but we had a ton of fun.

It was also wonderful to see my old high school music teacher, Moira Schäfer, who is still going strong at 70 and continues to teach music and choirs down in Knysna. It was Moira who first got me singing at weddings when I was 16, and those were my first paying gigs. Man, I've been doing this a long time now, and I still love absolutely every minute of it! Thank you Moira...

Art - January 27, 2009

Had my first art class last night. Wow, what fun! I think it will defnitely inspire me to be a better musician. Based in part on the advice of Julia Cameron in The Artist's Way, I'm growing my creativity by doing some art, to free up my soul and live large. Perhaps I will post some of the drawings here in the future, or use them for album covers...

Why I Love Richard Branson - January 23, 2009

Still on holiday in the fabulous resort town of Ballito on the Natal North Coast. Today I did my first ever microlight flight. It's so totally different to flying in a plane - you can feel the wind on your face, and at around 1200 feet we hit a bit of turbulence - I thought we were gonna crash & I was gonna die!

But it was the most exhilarating thing! We flew over the new King Shaka Airport & the azure sea. I felt a little like RB in a hot air balloon or doing some other crazy stuff! I'm re-reading his book "Screw It Let's Do It" - inspiring thoughts & about all I want to digest on holiday.

Viva RB! I've learnt a lot about building a brand from Mr BRANDson...

Happy Old New Year - January 20, 2009

As Barack gets inaugurated today, I sit here on the beach, enjoying the summer... Ah, this is life! I feel like a mini Richard Branson on my almost island paradise.

I return to Jo'burg next week to hit the studio again and work on the solo album. The Platoon album has been released now and we'll spend 2009 getting it out there.

Have a great year!

The Audacity of Hope! - November 5, 2008

I spent most of last night watching the gripping US election results. I think John McCain would've made a fine president, but I'm really glad Barack Obama won. His message of the audacity of hope is utterly inspiring, because it reminds me of the cheeky hope that I have that anything is possible in my music career, if I only want it badly enough... Bring it on!

I also had a chat with Velden, a colleague of mine, who told me that he was sharing the power of dreams with a friend of his, and he played this friend my song, Could This Be Love?, because he really believes the song is the epitome of my dream. Thanks Velden! You rock...

Radio Beckons... - October 30, 2008

In the last 6 weeks we have (almost) been on 3 radio stations! During Moshito (the SA Music Industry Conference in Johannesburg) in September, we spoke on Classic FM about SA music; the night before the launch (23 Sep), I spoke on Midrand Radio, and then this week, we ALMOST got playlisted and ALMOST spoke on YFM. Watch this space...

If I Could... - October 17, 2008

I'm very, very excited to learn that one of the songs I co-wrote, If I Could, will be included on The Art of Men CD compilation, to be released in the US & Australia in 2009! Yay! I feel vindicated! I feel that my decision to follow my dream is starting to pay off, and I have no regrets...

Mom, You Raise Me Up! - September 24, 2008

Did my first-ever album launch last night, after many, many years of dreaming about doing it. It only took me about 20 years, and I'm so glad I persevered...

As much as I'm tempted to feel regret that I didn't do it when I was younger, I remind myself that I wasn't ready 5 years ago, let alone 10 or 20, and I'm just glad that I can look back in 10 years' time and feel totally satisfied that I lived my dream, and am still living it.

I'm sorry that my dad couldn't be there with us at the launch - he passed on 10 years ago. But I'm really, really glad that my mom was there. As a tribute for her 60th birthday, which was in July, and as a way of honouring her and thanking her, I sang You Raise Me Up. Standing ovation, I tell you! What a feeling...

Some of my friends came and told me afterwards how many a woman - and even the odd man - cried through the song. Of course my mom did... Mom, I love you, and I'm so glad I could do that for you. You're cool, and you're awesome, and I love you.

Rob.

Rob Rodell is Born - July 4, 2008

So this is the new me: Rob Rodell. For insight into my new name, check out www.incites.co.za. It's a happy day. I know I'll be happy living in Rob Rodell's skin, hopefully for the next 50 years at least. Lots and lots and lots of albums to make. So here goes...

Platoon - Room For One More - June 27, 2008

It's official: Platoon is releasing their debut album on 28 August 2008, just after my birthday. Wow! It's gonna be an amazing party. It had better be, since it took us TEN years to get this album out there... Man, talking about late bloomer. Well, you know what they say: better late than never!

Jeff Lynne - All Over the World - May 25, 2008

I suddenly realised the other day what a fan I am of Jeff Lynne & the work he did with ELO. I think subconsciously it has influenced my style of songwriting. All Over the World must rank as one of my favourite songs, and it makes sense: according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Light_Orchestra) they were masters at combining classical sounds with contemporary ones, something which I am also busy doing with my music. But maybe it's just because his music brings back such great memories of my childhood: the wonderful holidays we spent down in Durban at the beach, watching movies like Xanadu and Two of a Kind with Olivia Newton-John. I was so young back then!

Well, there you have it...

Ciao

Finding My Own Voice - May 15, 2008

Okay, so I'm finally getting off my butt and releasing my first solo effort (the headline name is the name of the album). I recently worked out - and added to my bio - that I started doing paying gigs back in 1987 - so it's been 21 years... I have definitely come of age, and before I get any younger (Rhonda Byrne is cool), it's time to be brave and get out there!

I'll keep you updated on the release date, which I'm gonna do totally "new music business model" and see what happens... Exciting times! Still need to upload my youtube & twitter stuff, amongst others. Man, gotta play some catch-up! Maybe I'll just post this self-same blog to my other forums, etc.

Well, that's me for now. Ciao!
